Jesus in America

Patrick Henry

Patrick Henry, the great patriot and orator of the American Revolution, said: “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religion but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

The Founding Fathers of America were religious and their faith was overwhelmingly Christian. Through the Bill of Rights and the First Amendment – “the wall of separation of church and state” – Thomas Jefferson’s famous phrase – they simply wanted to legislate against one official state-imposed religion and preserve and guarantee the people’s right to worship freely, whether Baptist or Catholic or whatever the church of their choosing. It was unthinkable to them that the Gospel would not continue to permeate the very fabric of society; indeed they deemed it essential to good government.

Voices today that use Jefferson’s “wall of separation” to try to justify Jesus Christ’s removal from all state institutions and public places, ignore the fact that:

“Throughout his administration, President Jefferson permitted church services in executive branch buildings and attended them himself. The Gospel was preached in the Supreme Court chambers and in the House. A woman evangelist preached a campmeeting type message in the House of Representatives to President Jefferson and his Vice-President and a crowded audience. Ministers from every denomination came to Capitol Hill and preached in government buildings. President Madison followed Jefferson’s example. They were consciously and deliberately offering symbolic support to religion as a necessary prop for republican governmentIt is no exaggeration to say that during their administrations on Sundays in Washington DC the state became the church!” (Source: The Library of Congress)

It cannot therefore be credibly asserted that in supporting the First Amendment to the American Constitution either of these gentlemen were seeking to write the church out of the state altogether. But that is what a vocal minority with a secularist-humanist agenda would have the American people believe in these days.

Thomas Jefferson

Charles Carroll, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, a Catholic, stated: “Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure, ……. are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.”

John Adams, the second President of the United States, wrote: “We have no government armed in power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a religious and moral people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.”

For America today to turn her back on the Gospel of Jesus Christ would be to forget the Source of all her prosperity and power, and thus court her own destruction.

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your forefathers, as it is today. If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. (Deuteronony 8:17-19)

Abraham Lincoln said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

We should not watch that happen! As the Body of Christ, the Lion of Judah, the churches in America today need to out-vocalize the vocal minority. They need to ROAR!

The churches cannot stay silent. They need to speak out against the rising tide of secularism that would lock the church out of American affairs and throw away the key… only there is no door that men can shut against God. They also need to speak out against increasing immorality, materialism and social disintegration.

In short, Jesus Christ needs enthroned once more in the heart of America!

The same secularist and anti-Christ spirit is active in the United Kingdom. Britain appears to be a long way down that destructive path. Therefore there’s an urgent need for the church in Great Britain also to roar, to shout and make its voice heard – loud and clear.

Edmund Burke once said: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”
